Chang Tung Sheng Demonstrating Tai Chi
Chang Tung Sheng (1908–1986) is seen performing Tai Chi in this film taken in 1965 at the Taiwan Central Police College in Taipei. Chang was the senior instructor for unarmed training at the college. Chang Tung Sheng started learning Kung Fu early, at 7 years old from his father and grandfather. Later in his youth he became a disciple of Chang Feng Yen, a famous Shuai Chiao master. Shuai Chiao (a type of Chinese wrestling) became Chang’s main art and became a famous master known by the nickname “Iron Butterfly”.
When Chang Tung Sheng was about 20 years old, he went to Nanking to study at the Central Kuoshu Institute, where many famous masters taught the major styles of Kung Fu. At the Institute he eventually became a junior instructor, where he exchanged knowledge with some of the great masters that taught there. Chang Tung Sheng later went on to create Chang style Tai Chi Chuan from his experiences with Yang style Tai Chi Chuan, Xingyi, and his vast knowledge of Shuai Chiao.
