Cheng Man Ching – Tai Chi Sword Training
Cheng Man Ching (1902 – 1975) is seen training the Tai Chi Sword of the Yang style of Tai Chi Chuan with his students from New York City. This is part of the film footage that was taken in New York City in the early 1970’s. In the beginning of the film we see Cheng fencing with the Tai Chi Sword in the park with his student and translator Tam Gibbs. We then get to view what it must have been like in the Tai Chi classes in New York City. Cheng Man Ching takes turns fencing with his senior Tai Chi Sword students.
Cheng Man Ching was a student of the famous Yang Cheng Fu, from whom he learned the traditional Yang style of Tai Chi Chuan. After learning from Yang Cheng Fu, Chen started to teach Tai Chi Chuan. First he taught the Yang style Tai Chi Chuan Long Form, and then later he developed a “Short Form” of Yang style Tai Chi Chuan consisting of 37 movements for which he is most well known for.
In 1949 Cheng moved from Mainland China to Taiwan, where he taught many students his shortened form of Tai Chin Chuan. Cheng Man Ching eventually moved to New York City where he opened up a school for Tai Chi Chuan, and where this film footage was taken.
Below is a DVD on the Yang style Tai Chi Sword from another one of the students of the Yang Cheng Fu!
