Cheng Man Ching Performs Tai Chi Sword

Cheng Man Ching (1902 – 1975) demonstrates the Sword Form from the traditional Yang style of Tai Chi Chuan. This sequence would have been filmed in New York City during the early 1970′s at Riverside Park. Cheng  learned the Yang style of Tai Chi Chuan from Yang Cheng Fu. Cheng Man Ching eventually started to teach Tai Chi Chuan. He had first taught the Long Form of the Yang family style Tai Chi Chuan, and later developed his own “Short Form” of Yang style Tai Chi Chuan for which he is most well known for.

Cheng Man Ching moved to Taiwan in 1949 where he taught his 37 Movement Yang Style Short Form to students, including William C.C. Chen, T.T. Liang, Benjamen Lo, and many others. Later Cheng moved to the United States, and in 1964 he founded the Shr Jung Center for the Cultural Arts in New York, where his Sword Class was very popular amongst his students.

Being trained and proficient in Tai Chi Chuan, Chinese medicine, painting, calligraphy, and poetry, Cheng Man Ching was also known as the “Master of Five Excellences”,
