Tung Ying Chieh Demonstrates Yang Tai Chi Chuan

Tung Ying Chieh (1898-1961) performs the second section of the traditional Yang style of Tai Chi Chuan long form. This footage was filmed in 1950 in Malaysia on one of his many visits. Even today the tradition of the Tung family teaching continues in Malaysia is still carried on by Dong Zeng Chen and Alex Dong, the grandson and great-grandson of Tung Ying Chieh.

Tung Ying Chieh was one of the main students of Yang Cheng Fu. He accompanied Yang on many trips and assisted with the teaching. During the war years when Japan invaded Tung Ying Chieh relocated to Macau and then Hong Kong, Where he established the Tung Ying Chieh Tai Chi Chuan Gymnasium. It was from here that he was invited to teach in Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia. Today there is still a strong following of Tai Chi practitioners who trace their lineage back through Tung Ying Chieh.

If you are a practitioner of the Yang style of Tai Chi Chuan, then the book below is a “Must Have” item! It is a translation by Louis Swaim of the book written on Yang style Tai Chi by Yang Cheng Fu, the teacher of Tung Ying Chieh. Click on the image to see more!

  1. I am so impressed by the video that I would like to restart practicing again. I have been pea ticking the Yang style for two years and a halts now I almost not remember all the forms that I enjoyed so much in my life. Once again I wish I could practice that beautiful art of Tai Chi the Yang Style. Blessings and Light !!!

  2. I’m 70 years old and the Yang form 108, as performed by Tung Tseu, is my favorite form of tai-chi. Good video.

  5. Methinks this is two different takes – notice how the lighting changes. But great! and I just love the cars in the background 🙂

  6. Great post, always nice to see grandmaster Tung Ying Chieh performing!
Thank you for the good work here! Maybe you know that he is the actual writer of the book you mention, he wrote the book for master Yang Chen Fu.
Grandmaster Tung was also Yang’s assistant and teacher in Yang’s school. He was appointed to lead Yang’s latest school in Canton, when Yang got sick, and Yang passed away in 1936, and to take care of he’s son. But a few years later Master Tung had to take refuge in Hongkong to avoid the Japanese occupants.
