Cheng Wing Kwong Performs Wu Style Tai Chi Sword

Cheng Wing Kwong (1903–1967) performs straight sword of the traditional Wu style of Tai Chi Chuan in this video. Cheng was an inside disciple of the famous Wu Chien Chuan (1870 – 1942).

Cheng Wing Kwong began his training in the Wu style of Tai Chi Chuan as a young man at the Hong Kong Ching Wu Martial Arts Club. Cheng’s teacher was Chiu Sau Chien, the nephew of Wu Chien Chuan. Wu Chien Chuan moved to Hong Kong in 1937 to teach his style of Tai Chi. Shortly after Cheng Wing Kwong began learning Tai Chi from the famous Wu  Chien Chuan, and was accepted as an indoor disciple.

Cheng Wing Kwong trained hard and became very proficient in the Wu style of Tai Chi Chuan. Over time, he started teaching, and became the Vice President of Wu Chien Chuan Tai Chi Academy in Hong Kong. Along with Wu Gong Yi, the son of Wu Chien Chuan, Cheng travelled to Guangzhou, Singapore, and Malaysia where they started schools teaching the Wu style of Tai Chi Chuan.

Before he learned the Wu style of Tai Chi Chuan, Cheng had studied Hsing I Chuan and Ba Gua Chuan from either Sun Lu Tang or one of Sun’s students. Cheng eventually included elements from his experience with the Sun style into his own Tai Chi and his teaching. Because of this, the lineage of Tai Chi from him is referred to as the Cheng Wing Kwong Wu Style. One of his well known students was Cheng Ting Hung, who taught in Hong Kong.
