Choy Kam Man – Yang Tai Chi in the 70’s

Choy Kam Man (1919-1993) performs the Traditional Yang style Tai Chi Chuan form with his students in this film from the early 1970’s. This was filmed in the courtyard of San Fransisco’s China Town YMCA, where Choy Kam Man taught for years. Choy Kam Man started learning his tai chi at 14 years old from his father Choy Hok Peng (1886 – 1957). His father was longtime student of Yang Cheng Fu, and is considered one of the pioneers of tai chi in the USA.  Choy Hok Peng started teaching tai chi in America in 1939.

“Thirty or forty students would surround Master Choy after four hours of training at each Saturday Club.  We’d ask to see applications.  Master Choy had the ability to sew together inferences, nuances, and associations addressing one student’s questions with the question that came from another student.  He could answer two or three student’s questions at once this way. ”

Mark Small: longtime student of Choy Kam Man

My Mom and Dad studied with Master Choy, and I remember going to these classes as a kid. My Dad still teaches Tai Chi to this day!

      Hello Stacy,
I studied with Master Choy in 1969 in SF Chinatown. Where is your father teaching Tai Chi, I learned long form but was discouraged by outsiders of doing Tai Chi. Have just started Bagua Zhang but alas my teach is leaving the area. I am going to study Qigong for now. BTW I am 69yrs. old and am invigorated with my Bagua training. All the best.
